Alone

(In which, yes, Les Misérables is an inspiration.)

***

When you're not here
lavender seems paler,
the wind colder
and the night longer.

When you're not here, I am Eponine
singing and dying in the rain.
But I want to believe
you'll live and look for me
for I am your Cosette.

Because you said.

Because you said!

And if holding on to words is logical, then
nothing makes more sense than those three words
perfectly uttered
transmitted through cords
and was cut -
but they still cut
through me.

Will I be eternally singing in the rain?
Or will you live and look for me?
